  • Marlborough Marine Futures Forum - 2 July 2017

26 July at 09:08 from atlas

    Overview

Strong support was expressed for a special marine management area for Marlborough at the second 2017 Marlborough Marine Futures Forum on 2 July.

The Forum focused on a paper circulated by the Trustees to provoke and focus discussion proposing a Marine Park concept for the Sounds. Discussions were robust and informative and the results of an online survey revealed many people want a special marine management area rather than a Marine Park. The idea of zoning and managing areas for their associated uses and values was supported and the Trustees were encouraged to develop these ideas further. These will be circulated after further discussion with the Marlborough District Council on how overarching management frameworks and overlapping functions can be integrated.

The Trust is keeping the online survey open until the end of August. The link to the survey can be found here: Exploring the Marine Park Concept

Note that you need to read the Public Discussion Document before completing the survey.

A report of the results will be provided to all on the mailing list in September.

The project will call another Forum in September if the Government makes significant policy announcements before the election and to update the Forum on discussions with Council.
